What do you do for work ?

Just wondering what people do with their day.

If you do not work Like I had not for months and months..months prior to this month or the month before

Tell me what you had done last or what you do as a profession.
BoneRemake says...

I wake up, drive ten kilometers to a shop.

Generally get into one of two trucks that tow either a directional drill, or a trailer with a gas line reel and a mini-excavator.

Sometimes I drive a small bulldozer to tow a bigger gas line trencher. Sometimes I operate the Excavator(s) and I operate the directional drill whenever we do a job that requires it.

I generally enjoy my day.

lucky760 says...

I wake up at 5:45am and drive 24 (or sometimes 23) minutes to work. I'm always the first one in the office so I get to enjoy solitude and silence for a couple of hours.

I am a software architect and implement systems from bottom to top and from back-end to front. I sit in front of two computer screens for my entire work day before heading home, usually at 2:30pm.

There I spend the rest of the day with my wife and 1.5 children, then put the boy in bed at 7:00pm, and at about 10:00pm start working on my contract software projects. I recline with my laptop on my lap as I work until 1:00-3:00am depending on the night (and how hard Mr. Sandman is punching my eyes shut).

Creating software and seeing it in action is my passion and I love everything about it. The only difficult part of my work is not having enough time in the day for it now that I'm a parent (and Harry Chapin's "Cat's in the Cradle" starts looping in my head when I even consider working instead of spending time with my boy).

UsesProzac says...

I work hard at hardly working.

On a less facetious note, I am a stay at home mom, but the clock is ticking down on that. My son turns 3 in August and starts pre-school. I've been putting off college for 10 years now. Got accepted to IUPUI and I've been dragging my feet on that, but I want to do sound engineering. Job security? What's that.

kulpims says...

i wake up around 8 AM. then I watch colbert report, read a book, masturbate, drink coffee, have a smoke. I go to my office, which is 200 yards from my flat, at around 10 AM. I do some stupid shit on my computer, write a few emails, but soon get bored and piss off to town to have a capucino and maybe eat something. then I usually visit my friend that owns a clothing and ganja smoking accessories store where we enjoy our smoke, drink coffee and talk for a while. if I have stuff to do, I go back to my office. if not, I sit on my bike and pay a visit to my favorite watering hole where i down a beer or a shot of tullamore. afternoons i spend at home, do some stuff I ahven't done at my office, but mostly just watch movies and tv series I download from piratebay. then i go riding my bike somewhere up in the surrounding hills. sometimes I go flying with my paraglider, if the weather's fine. evening's I spend smokinh ganja and drinking beer while watching game of thrones and masturbating to lena headey. life's boring

well, ok, last week we started a music festival that lasts until the end of summer, so almost every evening I ahve to attend different gigs, which is a pain in the ass

nah, I love my job

Zifnab says...

Well I get up at about 7:00 and then make my way to work (about a 35 minute drive). I work for a University (and have for close to 15 years) as a Systems Administrator. I get to try to juggle all of the different systems we have in place and keep everything operational as well as impliment the many new projects we have on the go.

I enjoy my work and it's full of challenges which keeps me from getting bored.

The rest of my time is taken up with my wife and nine year old son.

KnivesOut says...

I work as a SharePoint Consultant (although my background is .Net web development). Half the time I work from home, the other half I drive between 30 minutes and an hour to go on-site with clients. Sometimes I build things for them that they don't have the in-house talent to build. Sometimes we just talk about the best ways to build things, and they go build it themselves. I spend a lot of time talking and writing about information architecture and best-practice.

Every day I go to lunch. I enjoy lunch immensely.

In the evenings I hang out with my son and wife, play video games, watch movies, read books.

gwiz665 says...

I work as a game programmer, mainly in UI. We work in Unity3D with C#.

I get up at 8(ish), brush my teeth and take the bus to work. Get in at 9, set down and work on awesome stuff. At 17 (5 PM for you 12h types) I go back home and play starcraft or diablo or @Lann.

Lets see...
After a solid 5-6 hours sleep...
I'm up at 6 a.m. Out the door by 7:15 and in my desk by 7:45.
I work at a college as a Graphics designer. I design everything for campuses in five different towns.
-I design but am not limited to posters, fliers, newspaper and magazine ads, brochures and booklets, t-shirts, bookmarks, vehicle on-lays, and just about anything that you can think of that can be printed including stickers, water bottles and other promotional media.
-I also spend a lot of time designing graphics and fixing web pages on the college's current website as well as an entire site redesign for our 20,000 page website.

Then I go home, cook dinner, clean house and/or, put the kids to bed and then stay up for free-time till 12 or 1 o'clock a.m.

Then repeat

Shepppard says...

Monday, Thursday and Sunday, I wake up whenever I want, and leave for work at about 4:30 to start my shift at 5:30 as a line cook. Those three days I'm "Pre-close", so for about 3 hours I stay in my section and cook food in an oven (Things like Quesadillas, Nacho platters, etc.) Then around 8ish, we start getting rid of the other cooks and I take over two more sections, fryers (cook things like chicken wings / fingers / coconut shrimp, etc.) and Pantry (Mostly salads and deserts) until around 10:30, when I have to start cleaning my half of the line (the three sections I mentioned) and then I'll be done anywhere between 11-1AM depending on how busy the night was.

On Friday and Saturday, I work splits. I'll have to wake up at 11 AM, shower etc. And leave by about 11:30, it takes me about 8 minutes to get to the restaurant and once there, I start clearing out the dish pit, once that's under control I'll either head on line and help out cooking with the lunch rush or go back and help out our prep department. If I'm helping prep, I'll either prepare food for later use in the night, or portion something that's already been made. That'll last anywhere between 1-4 PM, giving me a break before the second half of my split starts at 5, where I'll come back and work until it's less busy, and will be cut anywhere between 7-10 PM.

Well I wake up anywhere between 7am to 12pm. And do whatever. @2:20 I blast off to be at werk by 3pm., About 18 miles. I werk for a cellular tower antenna manufacturer. I am in the test department testing antennas after they are assembled. A no brainer job and I like it.

Edit: my boss is wearing a "like a boss" tshirt tonight. I though that I should add that.

Edit 2: I also get to blast my musics via eyefone all night.

I wake up about noon, eat breakfast, putz around on the Internet, do some research toward PhD, go practice my martial art, come home to continue doing research toward PhD, go to bed around 4am. Repeat. It's a thrilling ride!

You people work and sleep some crazy hours!

@lucky760 how can you work till 3am then get up at 5:45am? I would not be able to cope with that.

I get up around 6am when my daughter wakes up and starts yelling for attention, I hang out with her till her mum gets up with our baby, I ride my motorbike the 15 minutes to work between 8 and 9am where I work as a consultant economist in environmental and natural resource management stuff. I leave work before 6 to get home to the family, put the kids to bed, hang out with my wife, go to bed usually before 10 because the baby could get up anywhere between once and three times a night.

I get up around 7 and hop on a bus around 8 to go to work at a non-profit organisation that's working on climate change. I ride the bus and get home about 6. Play with the kids, and play on VideoSift in the evening. That's my week.

@kulpims I want your job.
@dag so you are responsible for the climate-change. Can't say I'm surprised...

I'm an estimator. That' right, I guess for a living. More specifically, I estimate the cost of commercial HVAC & plumbing projects.

End goal is when I get my BS in mechanical engineering, I'll know enough about how a project is built to make some positive waves in this field. She's not a sexy industry, but she puts food on my table.

PS: Actually, I'm probably going to crack and leave this industry altogether once I get my degree, but don't tell anybody. Air conditioning? Really?

I wake up and walk myself through the 12 steps to control my sift addiction. (Which I kept under control for years until just now). I just finished another college degree and I'm looking for a new career. In the mean time I do freelance design work (mostly Autocad 3ds max) for various clients. I walk about 15 steps to my in-laws basement every morning. The first hour of work I spend wishing I could find a permanent enough job to get out of this place (even though it's been a week). Then I work my butt off applying for jobs or finishing client projects. Eventually I become distracted and play those internet flash games for a while until I realize some profound truth (i.e. The Dave Mathews Band really does suck, or how much I really would like to see Brent Spiner take a leading role in a non-Star Trek movie.) I prefer to spend the evenings with my beautiful wife and 2.5 children.

This is how my day started this morning....

Woke up, fell out of bed,
Dragged a comb across my head
Found my way downstairs and drank a cup,
And looking up I noticed I was late.
Found my coat and grabbed my hat
Made the bus in seconds flat
Found my way upstairs and had a smoke,
and Somebody spoke and I went into a dream.

Actually....my office is only 1.5 miles from my apartment so I am lucky to have a short ride. I work in the internal technical helpdesk for a large company here in Maine. Outside of my 9-5 job I am usually hiking somewhere or taking photos of something.

Yes, it definitely is really tough. I am so desperate to go to bed most nights and I have to fight hard against my brain and body to stay awake, but it's my role in life to suffer so that my family doesn't have to. Sometimes I start to feel I am Jack's lost mind, and once or twice a week when I really start to get delirious, I'll very regrettably hit the hay at 10pm without getting any work done that night.

High doses of caffeine late at night doesn't work any more even though I don't consume it any other time of the day. I sometimes (jokingly) consider getting on drugs to help me stay awake. Instead, I hit the deck and give me 30 push-ups to rev my heart back up. That's usually good for a 30 minute boost (one minute per push-up).

i do not think i can call what i do officially work.
since i am a man of faith i tend to keep my life very simple and with as little trappings that would hinder my work.
1.wake up and first coffee and then morning prayers.

2.check emails for those in need of advice and counsel.(and dick around on facebook and VS)

3.procrastinate in getting out to my scheduled appointments (which is why i am always running late.i have some serious discipline issues concerning punctuality).the flavor of the appointments vary from addiction counseling to tarot readings and sometimes they may be just a spiritual boost for someone who is low and in need of company.(i live in a community with many elderly, and loneliness is a heart breaker).

4.usually around 4pm i start wrapping that part of the day up and head home for a shower and mid-afternoon prayer in order for me to get ready for the second part of my day where i bartend/wait tables at my long time friends resturaunt.

5.i do not make any actual tangible legal tender for the first part of my day.i may trade deal for something i need but usually i rely on the generosity and graciousness of those i help.i.e:the clothes i wear, the car i drive, the computer i am using right now were all gifted to me.even the house i reside in is a gift (well..kinda).

6.i do not own a credit card nor do i have a bank account.the cash i make from bartending and waiting tables is the cash i use to live and my paycheck goes to child support for my youngest child.

7.work till 10pm-11pm.come home.check emails again to see who or what needs help and in what fashion.mess around on facebook or VS for a bit and then off to study, read a book or watch something interesting.

8.night time prayers of gratitude for the day and all those who touch me,which can happen as early as 1am or as late as 3-4am.(depending on how much i am procrastinating).

i do fit family and friends (even a lovely woman) in that schedule but it is not always easy.thank god they love me.

From August through May I'm a biology professor at a local university that's about 20 minutes from my house. My hours change every semester depending on where the university needs me, but generally I'm only have to be on campus for 16 hours a week (it can be a sweet gig for you up and coming PhD graduates - @direpickle and @berticus).

However, I'm constantly urged to write more papers and so I do research on the side by working with other professors at other universities and colleges - mostly dealing with ecology-based topics. This forces me to do a lot of writing and reading at home on the computer when I'm not on facebook or VS. I also travel to the occasional biology conference in wherever the fuck for a few days.

But since it's summer, I'm given about 3 months of paid time off by the university and I now devote my time to research, chores given to me by my wife (@blahpook), hockey, paper writing, and video games.

Oh, and *quality.

Generally, I try to be a photographer. I've been trying to do it for years, but it's hard to be an artist and the industry has been changing blah blah blah. I went to college for photography. I kinda hate chasing clients, and staff photographer positions are rare these days. I'd love to do photo-essay work like this, but it isn't the 1940's anymore and getting paid work from thriving magazines can be difficult.

Lately, for work, I've been teaching English as a second language. I just got back from spending a year in Quebec City. I am planning to move to China to teach at the end of the summer. I hope I still get to log in to the sift from there.

i have 330am narcissism. time to necropost.

i usually wake at 6 am, jog 1 or 2 dogs and make breakfast for 2 small people.
at 730am, except in summer, i walk my kids to school 1.1 miles away.
at 8am i shower and then i go yoga. sometimes other people yoga with me. sometimes, it's just me.
if my husband is home that week, i'll come back home at 915 and hang out with him for 20 minutes.
then i ride my bike to my shop and massage some really awesome people. usually from 10am to 3pm.
but some days from 10am to 8pm. at some point i go home and hang out with my kids. dinner is prepared and consumed. then i take the kids to their various activities, kung fu or dance or art or piano. i usually work out while they're doing that. if i'm working late, the nanny or husband will do that part for me.

then we either all go swimming or i make a group of people do yoga with me. we end up back home at 815pm. the kids take showers and we take the dog/dogs for another jog. we usually play a game of blockus or dominos. then i read with my kids and make them go to sleep around 930pm. if my husband is home that week, we hang out until we fall over.
if my husband is not home that week, ill work on marketing for my shop or fuck around on the Internets until i get sleepy. in theory i'm doing businessy things, like accounting and inventory and stats and shit. but. usually i just neurotically plan trips at night. because i'm obsessed with them. we only go on about 1/3 of them. if it's the end of a fiscal quarter, i'm wishing i'd just break down and hiring an accountant.

While working a part-time job at a civil engineering firm, I got my undergraduate degree in General Business.

Looked for a job/career for 6 months, nothing.

Went back to school to get an MBA. A year later I was back searching for a job now with a Masters degree... nothing.

Finally, a year later I got a position within Disney doing finance for 2 hotels. Didn't like the job on many levels including the hour and a half commute each way with tolls which knocked out 1.75 days of salary a week (I didn't get paid very much ) I quit and work part time with the Engineering company again (welcomed me back with open arms) and now I am currently looking for a full-time career.
